This paper investigates the possibility of employing the 3D printing process, fused deposition modeling and selective laser melting to assist in electric motor design and manufacture. Benefits and weakness of the 3D printing technology compared with traditional manufacturing processes using 2D lamination and 3D soft magnetic composite are discussed. Advantages of the 3D printing, such as light weight, simplified fabrication and easiness to produce complicate structures are highlighted, in particular when applied to manufacture of various types of motors (e.g., induction motor, PM motor and dual air gaps motor). From the simulation results, it can be found that the 3D printing is a potential approach to alternate traditional manufacturing processes, especially for reducing the cost of prototype fabrication for motors with complicate geometric structures. |
